What are you reading Mondays..

Ack, it's that time of month again. October Monday reads over at J.Kaye's book blog. What a great time for some playful, and frightening spookiness.

I finally finished this week -

And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie
The Four Feathers - by A.E. Mason

And I finally finished the audio version of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows! Finally! That took f-o-r-e-v-e-r!

This week I have three I started weeks ago and am still trying to finish --

Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters - by Jane Austen and Ben Winters
The Poisonwood Bible - by Barbara Kingsolver
Mother Night - by Kurt Vonnegut Jr.

Reading anything good this week?
Come on! Throw me a bone here..

Excellent reading choices this past week. Enjoy your reading this week. I read The Poisonwood Bible quite awhile ago and really enjoyed it.
Mine is here: http://rundpinne.blogspot.com/2009/10/what-are-you-reading-monday_12.html

I finally started reading The White Queen by Phillippa Gregory. And thanks to Mandy, I'm starting the audio of Bunnicula with my kids this morning!!!

I have never read an Agatha Christie book(I know, I know!) I want to.... and your post here reminded me that I need to do this! :)

I did finish The Poisonwood Bible but just thought it was so-so. I just read Memoirs of a Geisha and just thought it was so-so. I don't know why I don't absolutely love books that everyone else does. I have yet to read a book about vampires. I didn't love Eat Love Pray. The two books I did love were The Help and The Book Thief. I'm headed over to your labels of stars to see what kind of books you like :)

Here's my What Are You Reading post, by the way:

Lynne's Letters

I just started
Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffenegger. It is kinda a Ghost story-I think.

I just got the Eyre affair, Romeo and Juliet, and Wuthering Heights.
I just finished the Maze Runner by James Dashner. It made me a little afraid of Mazes to be honest.

P.s Lula I love your picture at the top and I am coming in to town this week- would love to see your face.

I read Poisonwood Bible a long time ago. I remember thinking it dragged a bit for a while and then picked up. It's an Oprah pick. What can you say? I tend not to read her suggestions anymore because I've been burned a few times. I tried!

I read The Poisonwood Bible a few years back. The book stayed with me for a very long time! On another note, I love-love-love your header!

Jennifer - Saw your cute blog. Great book choices! I'm liking Poisonwood so far, but it's not going fast for me.

Suzette - Yeah, I can't wait to borrow it. I hope her new one is good. Go Bunnicula!

Sheila - Read it! That and Murder on the Orient Express are excellent reads.

Lynne - I'm worried about Poisonwood, but she's a biologist and as I'm a science nerd I can't make myself not read it. Dumb? Probably.
Read P&P straight away!

Tanja - you've got some great stuff coming up. I'm on hold for the Fearful book, like no. 88 or something so it's going to be a while. The Eyre Affair is excellent. And Wuthering Heights? May all time favorite. Watch the movie of it that came out in the 90's. It's a really good version.

Are you kidding me? You're coming to town and guess what I have??? The freaking swine flu!!
Perhaps we can talk through car windows if you promise to wear a mask over your face cuz girlie, this is a fun one. All the kids have it too. Good times..

J kaye - I'm definitely liking it so far. I like her way with words, it's just taking me a long time.
Glad you like the spooky header! I love Halloween.
Thanks for stopping by!

I have seen that version of Wurthing Heights. I have also read it, I just didn't own it.
I am sorry about the Swine Flu. I hate being sick, so I also hate winter.
I also just finished The Count of Monte Cristo and loved it. If I had unlimited time I would read the unabridged version, but 1400 pages kinda scares me.

Swine flu? Now you tell me. I would have put my mask on before commenting. Just kiddin'. Hope you feel better!

Thanks for following me. I'm following you too. For some reason it's telling me my picture is too big to upload, so I'm the one with the grey, shadowy profile. LOL

Did you breathe on my apples???? I hope you guys get well soon--sorry you have it, but at least you don't have to worry about vaccinations now, right? Let me know how much I owe you for the apples, I'll leave it on the doorstep and RUN! Get well soon!!!

Mary - I agree about the Oprah picks. They're hit or miss. I'm hoping I like this one, but usually I steer clear of them. Too much hype.

Tanja - Agh, you bought the one with the Twilighty cover didn't you! I liked TCOMC too, but it was extremely long. I'd no idea there was a shorter version. Should try that one next time.

Lynne - What is with those shadowy figures anyway? They couldn't come up with a less line-up type of picture with the great minds of Google?
Looking forward to your reviews!

Suzette - I wore a mask the whole time I had them..swears.
Apples have a natural repellent to germs don't ya know. An apple a day keeps the doctor away, or whatever dribble..
Will they make it another week so we can do pie filling??
Probably.

I'm starting to feel better - this is day 11, but now all the kids are sick, so well, there you have it.

I absolutely loved And Then There Were None. I liked The Poisonwood Bible. I didn't like Mother Night much at all.

I can't wait to read Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters.

Mother Night is for an online book club I'm participating in. A classic I've always wanted to read, so far it's good. A bit depressing, but anything about WWII usually is.
Thanks for stopping by!

The Poisonwood Bible is a great book. It's got some great dark humor to it.

Mother Night is another good one, but I like just about anything by Kurt Vonnegut.

L said...

I'm liking both so far. KV's writing also has a dark witty style. WWII is almost always a downer, but so far he's keeping it light. Thank goodness.

It sounds like a great reading week!

I hope you and your family feel better soon!!!

i did by the ones with the new covers. See, Lula, you love your books to look old and worn (not dingy) just antiquated(sp?). I like my books fresh and new. I like to open my book for the first time and get that brand new smell and know that no one has touched my book previously. It is another reason why I have a hard time with the library thing. I am prejudice against books that look...um...outdated. I have one book sitting on my shelf, and has been there for about two years, and I can't read it because the cover is so lame and it looks old.

I think I would feel differently if the books were valuable or collectors. I also like rare things that not everyone can get. Yes, I am that snotty. If I could get ARC for any book I would. If I knew an editor I would beg them for the chance to read a book not out yet, because I love it. I feel like I am doing something not allowed. A little psycho right? Oh well, I am a work in progress.

Yeah Suzette! I hope you like Bunnicula on audio. You should try Howliday Inn and Nighty-Nightmare too (the later being my favorite one on audio, you gotta love a story in a story and the guys is great at all the voices).

I am currently reading The Graveyard Book and I am having a hard time getting into it. I am hoping it picks up soon. I also picked up Witch Child from the library and I am looking forward to reading that next.

L said...

Thanks Marie, I see the end in sight. Maybe. I probably won't die tomorrow anyway.

Tanja - I knew it! Oh well, it's worth it, an excellent book. And you're just like Suzette aren't you, our own little Ms. Maltese Falcon old copy hater. I can see the allure of the new smell, but I like the old paper smell too. I love collecting old stuff be it books, furniture, whatever.

Probably most people love to get stuff before anyone else. That never happens to me, but I hear it's really cool.

L said...

Ooo Mandy excellent choices. Or at least I hear they're good. I've been wanting to read both of those for awhile.

Go Bunnicula!
